Black Boots Lost Loot
Black Boots Lost Loot

WHO: The parents and friends of the children of RSU 18

WHEN: Tuesday, May 24 from 7:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

WHERE: China Town Office

WHY: To support your child’s educational journey!

Next Tuesday, May 24 the school budget vote will be held at the China Town Office. All winter and spring, the school administration, together with our public and our teachers, have worked very hard to present a school budget that is both fiscally responsible and supportive of a robust educational experience for your child. That is an incredibly tough balance, but we feel very optimistic about the 2016-2017 budget!

The budget of $34,605,635 represents less than 1% of an increase from last year! Try to do that with your household budget! The current budget is attempting to put more supplies and books back into the hands of our teachers. Currently, China Middle School is already cutting one teaching position, and eight other positions have been cut district-wide. If this budget does not pass, it is likely that there will be deeper and more impactful cuts. Your support of this budget gives our schools the best chance of maintaining class sizes that optimize learning.

Recently, the Lewiston school budget was defeated by 6 votes and RSU 18’s failed last year and also three years earlier!! When a school budget is defeated, schools are basically at a standstill during those important summer months of planning until a budget is finally adopted. We were unable to hire new teachers, we were unable to order our school supplies, and we were unable to effectively plan for the upcoming school year. It is important that our China school families vote, so that our school budget has a strong chance of passing next Tuesday.

Please take the time to vote on May 24. Casting your vote is the most important educational support you can give to your child’s teachers and to the promise of your child’s rigorous and exciting educational journey.
