Author/Illustrator Ben Bishop in RSU 18

October 27, 2016

Earlier this month WES  and BCS libraries hosted Maine author and illustrator Ben Bishop.  Mr. Bishop, who is best known for his graphic novels, provided the illustrations for Lost Trail: Nine Days Alone in the Wilderness, a retelling of Donn Fendler’s Lost on a Mountain in Maine.

Mr. Bishop not only spoke to the students about his experience as an author/illustrator, he also used a document camera to develop artwork and text with the students.  â€śIt was the best presentation I have ever been too,” said one student.  Another student added, “ I was inspired by his perseverance.”

One teacher stated that she was “beyond impressed” with Mr. Bishop’s message of hard work, perseverance, and commitment, and has already been applying the lessons in writing classes.

The Williams Elementary visit for the 5th graders was funded by a grant from the Onion Foundation and the BCS visit, funded by the Stevens fund, was for 3rd through 5th grade.  The librarians from both schools were impressed by Mr. Bishop’s relatable message and passion for his work.  â€śHe was very approachable and funny,” said BCS librarian Kathryn Bailey.
